Who’s it for?
This picture — a screenshot from a video of my son rolling down a hill — captures the innocent, simple joy of being a kid. A little grass and an incline are all it takes, which begs the question: Who are the big parties, gifts, and elaborate trips really for?
Who are you competing with? Other parents? Society? Your own parents? I’m not here to be righteous — I’m guilty of it too. These stories are as much reminders to myself as they are to those who read them.
Maya Angelou said that people will forget what you said, but never how you made them feel.” The same is true for our children. It’s not the big events that shape our memories and the emotions we attach to them — it’s the thousands of small ones.
Make sure the little moments count as much, if not more, than the big ones.
